7. Clear all debt

Ok, who hasn't got this on their things to do list? If you're like me, it's been one of your main targets for quite some time now and you're probably a lot less closer to achieving it than when you first set it, right?

Well, this has been my longest target, there's no doubt, and things have certainly been worse before they got better but alas I'm sure somehow there is light at the end of the tunnel. It's just a very long tunnel!

First of all, to do this with the aim to pass it. I need to determine what is meant by the term 'debt'? Strictly speaking, a mortgage is a debt but I hope to mark this target off before I'm in my mid 60's, thank you!

So in this instance, the aim is pretty much to eradicate every item of debt that isn't the mortgage. That includes my personal loan, all overdrafts, all credit cards, everything taken out on finance packages, and anything owed to anyone else. I've quite a lot outstanding at the minute, manageable though but life would be a lot healthier if it was severely reduced.

I've already made a plan of what is coming in and going out over the next few years and will use this to inspire me to pay things off and reduce the outgoings. Besides, who knows what's just around the corner? We already know we have a little one on the way and so incomings may drop whilst Milly is out of work, whilst expenditure is sure to shoot up, what with food, furniture and nappies et al!

Milly is also yet to learn to drive and is planning on starting and passing before junior arrives, so that's going to be an unplanned expense, not to mention whatever we decide to do about running an additional car.

So the plan is to start concentrating on getting things paid off. The first thing is to identify current levels of debt, then focus on certain areas that will make the most difference. This includes paying things off with the highest interest rates, things that are needed to be paid sooner than others, and those that will make the biggest difference to us both in the short term and the long.

The next update to this will look at current levels of debt, covering what is owed to who, interest rates, end dates and will include some sort of plan to getting it paid off! Wish me luck!

6. Learn new home skills and put to use

Having purchased my first home in 2005, I soon realised how over-reliant on my dad I was! Decorating was something I wasn't at all used to nor built for in many respects! General household duties such as D.I.Y, gardening, etc were not my forté by any means and it was something of a shock to the system.

It's probably an indication of the times too as these were skills that were honed into the last generation and came naturally to our dads but at school, technology classes such as woodwork and electrical etc I didn't enjoy nor learn much from.

However, having finally managed to persuade people to buy me D.I.Y kits for the past few Christmas', as well as picking required bits up myself, I have found that the odd bits of home improving that I do, I both enjoy and feel I do well. Often it's just a lack of confidence, time and money that prevent me doing a number of tasks around the house but I want this to change and I want to become more of a man about the house and make our home perfect. Especially as now that we are expecting our first child and I am becoming the dad generation now, I want my children to look up to me, respect me for what I can do and learn from me. I certainly don't want them coming home from school at year 7 and laughing as they can rewire a plug socket and I can't!

There are a number of different skills that I wish to learn, whether these are from trial and error, learning from others, or taking short courses. There's no better time too than when there's a child on the way as I have a nursery to sort out. My next few updates on this target will specify what new skills I wish to acquire as well as the progress with them.

5. Attend a major European game at Anfield

Growing up a huge Liverpool fan was great for me but it was always disappointing that tickets and travel for games was always so difficult to acquire, or too expensive. I dreamed of the days where I could drive and take myself and friends / family to the games, and where money wasn't an issue. Sadly, the fact is that unless there's a huge shift in the financial side of football, or my personal situation in terms of money and location changes, I'm stuck with making it as and when I can, which means very rarely these days.

One of my major ambitions, particularly following such amazing nights as at Anfield against Olympiakos, Barcelona, and the Chelsea games, was that I NEED to be at one of these games and experience that amazing atmosphere first hand. Sure I've been to Anfield and experienced a great atmosphere, sat on the Kop, and seen some great games, there's still a desire to make one of those magic nights that get remembered for years.

Technically, I achieved the original version of this target, set in 2005 to simply attend a home European tie. Following our amazing Champions League triumph in 2005, I went to 2 of the 3 qualifying rounds the following year, against T.N.S and FC Kaunas. But whilst these were decent games, and I witnessed an impressive Steven Gerrard hat trick, they weren't magic nights. I needed them to be bigger games, therefore the criteria changed to being full Champions League games, rather than just qualifiers. This was to taste the full atmosphere on a European night, which are aided by the fact that the ground is full of your cream of the crop LFC fans, rather than the ones (like myself?) who pick up tickets to the lesser and cheaper games, such as euro qualifiers...

After Athens in 2007, where I achieved a lifelong dream to attend a Liverpool European cup final, I became much more active in seeking tickets to the bigger games and connections made on my travels meant that it might not be too long before my dream European night was met.

In 2007/08, I thought my time had come when I secured tickets for Liverpool v Marseilles, my first Champions League proper game. The tickets were in the Anfield Road End and so the atmosphere wasn't quite as special and a 1-0 loss didn't make for the best experience, so I persevered. The next one was in the 8-0 annihilation of Besiktas. Whilst the game will be one remembered for many years, sat in the Main Stand, again, the atmosphere, though fantastic, still didn't have that electric feel to it. Yes, Liverpool needed to win the game to stay on course for qualification to the knockout stages but by the 5th or 6th goal, the feeling was more that of a walk in the park than a top European encounter.

The game needed to be bigger and so the criteria changed once again. A group game wasn't just going to be enough it needed to be knockout football. My next set of European tickets were against Benfica in the UEFA Cup Quater Finals against Benfica, which were followed up by Semi Final tickets against Atletico Madrid. These were in the 2009/10 season when we had seriously faltered in league and domestic cups and so this competition was the only potential saving grace to our season, but still, our priority maintained the chase for 4th place in the league to ensure Champions League football. This had an adverse affect on the games yet again as many regulars chose to stay away so the atmosphere were still great yet subdued. It was better for the Atletico game, especially experiencing the pre match atmosphere in the pub and around around the ground, certainly my best atmosphere since Athens but as we lost that game, I still feel that this target is yet to be completed.

So here are the criteria I believe would give me enough tk say, Yes, that was it!

- Home champions league game in the knockout stages, the later round, the better, I.e. Semi final. Preferably second leg too.
- Grand opposition
- Kop end
- Great game, great atmosphere
- Game winners

I think this would just about do it, topped off by possibly meeting someone like Man United in the next round / final!

4. Look the part

Albeit, included in my first target (1. Reach Level 6), this target is based around my refereeing as whilst it Is remotely linked to the first target, it remains in itself a totally separate goal. What I mean by this is to always be prepared in terms of my kit, but also that the kit that I have looks professional and does a job.

When I first started refereeing, in all honesty a key reason for starting was extra income as I was to be married towards the end of my first season. Taking this into account as well as not knowing at the time how far I wanted to go with my refereeing, I didn't really want to be shelling out for a proper kit so I bought a cheap one off eBay that did the job. It wasn't an obvious cheap one to the untrained eye and was more than adequate for my first season in the Youth League. I always ensured I had good boots too so that I was comfortable and I also had my own flags, whistle, cards etc that I needed.

Since advancing into the promotion pool and growing aspirations of one day being a top referee, my kit requirements have since grown. Firstly, I am required to turn up to my 'proper' games looking the part and so a purchased FA Referee badge has been sewn to a smart jacket and I always go in a clean shirt, trousers and tie to match, together with clean shoes. I have also recently purchased my first 'proper' kit, the Umbro, all black PGMO kit. It's very classy and I really enjoy wearing it, but the one issue I have with it as because it is not white-trimmed, when refereeing as a team, all 3 officials should wear the same. Not the same kit but either all black, or white trimmed, therefore when the others don't have all black, i'm back to the eBay kit. Therefore, a proper white trimmed kit is top of my list of requirements as well as a number of other items:

- new white trimmed referee strip
- large jacket
- tracksuit
- training jacket
- long sleeved body warmer
- alternative coloured referee shirt
- good quality flags
- bigger kitbag
- FA towel
- white shirt with FA badge
- FA tie / RA tie
- accessories including spare whistle, pencils, pencil sharpener, pressure gauge, mini pump, first aid kit, heat rub, plasters, suntan lotion, spare watch, etc

When the above shopping list is completed and I feel that I am comfortable with my full attire on a consistent basis, then I will mark this as complete. I am the sort of person that as and when something needs replacing, such as a new kit, new boots etc, I get them, so I won't keep this target as incomplete due to the chance that I will need to buy things in future. I just want to always look the part. This will all help me achieve my first target, to be promoted.

3. Publish a book about Liverpool FC

Anyone who spent any time with me during the years of 1999 and 2004 knew that I spent the majority of this period working hard on what has almost always being my primary goal, to have a book published on my love for Liverpool FC.

Whilst priorities have changed over time, this still remains one of my ultimate goals in life and I will be the biggest disappointment of my life should I not succeed with this.

The initial plan was to develop a book covering the full history of the club, mainly a statistical based one, but many recent releases have between them covered the bulk of what I intended to do. However, I still have to my name a fair amount of research and I still fully intend to do something with this.

It's been quite some time since I last worked on this. I had a spell in early 2009 when I was off work with a broken ankle when I did a great deal but this was the first time in over 3 years that I had spent much time on it and it also remains the last time. I was lucky to have a job a few years ago that allowed to some extent for a lot of personal work to be done but I am no longer in that position.

My goal to produce the ultimate LFC book may not be quite what it was but I still believe I can create something unique. For now, I won't go into any more detail than already mentioned in this first post, but over the next few updates on this target, I hope to get back on track with my research, develop a plan of what I want to achieve, and to start making further progress with it.

2. Have the perfect family

Ok, this target may take some time to achieve and also, you may be thinking, be something that everyone aspires to, but I have put it here to ensure that we don't just let things happen if we don't want them to.

What I mean by having the perfect family isn't just about saying we want one son and one daughter, with the son the eldest etc as that is impossible to plan for, but it's about being ready to have children as and when we want them, taking into account what gender we have at each point, ensuring the gap between the ages are what we would hope for them to be, and to enjoy every minute as a family, setting a good example to our children.

We know at this point, firstly that we are expecting our first child. This was planned and we are both thoroughly looking forward to it. We also know that we want more than one child but the total hasn't been given a great deal of thought just yet. We'll have to see how life pans out for us before deciding where and when to take the next step. We also know that we want at least one of each. I couldn't bare not to have a son, Milly certainly needs her little daughter, and I too would be devastated if I didn't have a little girl too. So to start with that's the plan.

I could tick this off now really as we're perfect as a two-some, will be perfect when the little one arrives, circa September 2011, and will remain perfect with every addition afterwards. But by having this as a target, it ensures we do consider how we develop as a family, just so that it happens as we want it too.

1. Reach Level 6

Ok, my first target I'm going to set is for me to reach Level 6 with my refereeing. Having qualified 18 months ago and since officiated in over 100 games, I am really enjoying it, feel that I could do this for many years, and also have the belief that I can take it quite far. I certainly want to give it a go and see anyway.

To be honest, I won't be particularly disappointed if I achieve just a jump to level 6, as it's the next step and it's progression, but with as much as i'm putting into my refereeing at the minute, and have been for some time, i'm going to do all I can to go to Level 5 at the next step. Level 4 at this stage is perhaps asking a little too much. I want to get plenty of experience behind me before I get there, thugh I wouldn't turn it down if I was offered the opportunity.

I believe there are a number of factors that work in my favor for this. First of all, I have become quite well known in the past 12 months or so. Last season I was mainly a youth league referee only. I was new to it and not many people got to know all about me. However, I began this season as Referee Secretary of the Mansfield Youth League, which got me quite well known amongst local referees, teams and the County FA, and since being added to the promotion pool, enabling me to referee at a higher level, I have met many of the more experienced referees.

I am learning a lot by doing games with these and should continue to do so to help me progress with this ambition. I know I have a number of things to work on to achieve this. First of all I want to ensure I always look the part in terms of kit, boots, organisation etc. I am also always available as and when the County FA need a referee and so this may be helping my chances of getting myself known. I do need to be more organised in terms of paperwork though. I don't always send in cautions and sendings off as well as my games which isn't going to help my chances if I can't get assessed.

There's a lot on the pitch I know I could improve on but with just 18 months experience behind me, I feel I am doing well so far. So long as I continue to evaluate my performances, heed the advice of others, and learn from mistakes, I can only improve.

Current Targets

So on the site, as well as the 11 things already achieved, I have another 19 targets running. As mentioned, I will be resetting this, setting another 43 things, whether using any of the 11 already achieved (those that I believe merit remaining on the list), continuing with any of the 19 targets currently running (again those that will serve a purpose remaining) or setting new ones up.

Here are the 19 targets in progress:

- Take more pictures
- Keep an up to date blog
- Slow down
- Sleep more
- Read a book a month
- Go to the cinema more
- Pay off my credit card
- Get out of debt
- Be more organised
- Stop throwing clothes on the floor
- Stay in shape
- Take a gap year
- Go to 10 Liverpool games in 1 season
- Go to a big European Home game
- Get a book published
- Learn to play the electric guitar
- Speak Italian
- Stay sober
- Move away

From now on I'll be starting posts numbered from 1. to 43. highlighting the start of my new list. I don't know whether I'll go straight from 1 to 43 and then back round again with updates; probably not as I can't see me setting 43 new targets straight away. It'll probably be just 20 or so for now. I may just post randomly but it should be easy to follow each target as I'll tag them with the number.

Achieved So Far

Using the website 43things.com, I have already marked a number of items as achieved. However, as mentioned in my first post, I had already achieved the majority of these before even registering on the site, so it doesn't really feel as though these should have been included in the 43 things, otherwise I could have just found 43 things I had already accompolished and marked them down as done and not bothered with anything else. This seems a bit pointless though and despite the fact that I can go further than just 43 achievements, I want to start again with the aid of this blog. I will set maybe just a handful of things to do over the next couple of years or so and add to them as and when I can think of something relevant. I'd hate to just make a list of 43 things now made up of things I'm not really that bothered about doing just for the sake of the list, even though, as I keep saying, you can go further than the 43.

So, albeit I will start from scratch with some new targets, here is a list of what I had already marked down as done:

- Buy a house: This was done in the summer of 2005
- Move out: To me, it's the same as the above but it was on the site as well so I marked it off!
- Get a Passport: Everyone has one, don't they? Not really an achievement!
- Learn to drive: Probably my first real achievement, again, done in the summer of 2005 (big year!)
- 3 Liverpool Matches: I wanted to start going to games and ticked this off in season 2005/06
- 5 Liverpool Matches: I wanted to start going more regularly and achieved this milestone in season 2006/07
- Live off my Salary, not Overdraft: I only achieved this after taking a loan out which paid off my overdraft....
- Complete HNC: Passed January 2008 :)
- Stop smoking: Never really started as such so was easy to quit
- Find love: Marked off with the wrong girl but have since put it right :)
- Get over my ex: No problem!

I'm currently doing another 19 targets and so in the next post I'll review which of these make the official 43 things. Some of the above may be included too but certainly not all of them.
